Dalmatian feeding:
Under Breed specific problems we have mentioned that the Dalmatian has got a unique metabolism which differs from all other dog breeds. It means that Dalmatians smell less like wet dogs but it also means that you have to keep an eye on their diet. However, if we talk about Breed specific problems it does not mean that your Dalmatian is likely to become a stone former but that the possibility increases with the wrong type of food.
Personally we have opted for the Barf (Bones and raw food or Biodegradable and readily available food). This is not only because of the Dalmatians metabolism BUT we generally believe that a dog is not designed to eat dried (overcooked) or canned (more water then nutrition) food.
So, what do we feed?
60% of raw meaty bones such as chicken carcasses, lamb ribs, Turkey tails, Turkey necks, lamb necks, beef marrow bones and chicken wings. The bone to meat ratio should be approximately 50% to 50%. If the lamb bones or the marrow bones are running a little low on meat I’ll just add some lamb mince.
We buy all our meat from either http://www.landywoods.co.uk or from the Tesco’s Value range. Feeding real food to dogs is not half as expensive as you think.
The other 40% are made up with fruit, vegetables (for a Dalmatian not to many Chard’s, Spinach etc), eggs and dairy products such as Cottage Cheese and home made Kefir.
To compliment the diet we feed Cod liver oil, Salmon oil, hemp seed oil and Olive oil. Oils should always be cold pressed and should never be fed without adding Vitamin E. Occasionally we also add Kelp or additives such as the “missing link”.
